The Santa Monica Mountains recreational trails network

PAGE UNDER DEVELOPMENT.

As land across the mountain range was being obtained by state and federal funds, the Santa Monica Mountains Task Force recognized the need for trails.

In 1978 we organized a volunteer trail crew, led by Ron Webster. Over the years, the crew built and maintained many of the hiking trails in these mountains, beginning with the Musch Trail at Trippet Ranch.

Several of these trails laid the foundation for the 67-mile Backbone Trail.

Over forty years since its inception, the trail crew maintains a strong program of building and maintaining trails that support recreational use throughout the Santa Monicas and adjacent parkland.

Trails LA County is a useful resource for anyone planning to visit the trails.

For additional visitor information for specific parks and beaches, including downloadable trail maps and park use regulations, visit the links in our land management agencies directory.
